Internet Hardware

The Internet is an interconnected computer network that uses a standardized Internet Protocol Suite (TCP/IP) system to connect users across the world. Many devices are required to connect to the Internet. Hardware used for network connections and data transfer includes cable modems, DSL modems, fiber optic modems, and Ethernet cables. Wi-Fi cards and wireless routers are required to set up a wireless network.

Cable Modems

You can get Internet connection through your cable television line using a cable modem. You can watch television and use your Internet connection simultaneously. A cable modem is a network bridge that connects multiple networks at the data layer. These modems can be used to connect computers, printers, and peripherals.

DSL Modems

A Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) modem allows you to obtain an Internet connection through your standard telephone line. Using DSL, you can talk on the phone while using the Internet. This is because DSL and telephone communications do not use the same frequencies. These modems are designed for high speed Internet connections and use frequencies above 25 KHz for Internet access.

Dialup Modems

Dial-up modems are among the least expensive hardware options required for Internet access. They allow you to access the Internet using a standard telephone line. The telephone line is connected to the system through a dial-up modem. This service dials a particular number provided by the Internet Service Provider (ISP) to connect to Internet.

Fiber Optic Modems

Fiber optic modems converts electronic and data signals into optic signals, which are transmitted across the network through fiber optic cables. This type of modem is ideal for fast and efficient transfer of a large amount of data. Two types of fiber optic modems are available for data transfer: single mode and multimode configurations.

Wireless Routers

A wireless router is a device that determines the network point to which a packet of data should be forwarded in order to reach its destination. Wireless routers function as both a router and access point. Wireless routers are used to connect computers, media players, and game consoles. These routers are very advantageous as they allow you to access the Internet, even when you are travelling.

Sound Cards

Sound cards enable you to play back or record sound. These chips input sound from the microphone to the speaker. You can record, manipulate, and output sound using audio cards and relevant software. You can choose from full duplex and enhanced duplex cards.

Webcams

A webcam can be attached to your computer and can be used to take photographs and make videos. Images can also be displayed on the web and can be accessed when required. Webcams are low resolution cameras that are specifically designed for video conferencing and instant messaging.

Wi-Fi Cards

A Wireless Fidelity (Wi-Fi) card is a Local Area Network (LAN) adapter that is used to access the Internet. The built in wireless radio and antenna allows you to connect to the Internet without the use of cables. Data transfer takes place through infra red rays. Wi-Fi cards are typically used in portable devices like laptops, palmtops, and notebook computers.

CAT 5E Cables

A category 5E cable is a twisted pair of high signal integrity cables that is used for data transmission across networks. These cables support Ethernet speeds up to 1000 Mbps.

CAT 5E cables also support other networks such as token ring networks, voice services, and ATMs.
